Navigating the Lion City: A Bhutanese Scholar's Tale of Challenges and Triumphs in Singapore

By Ngawang Dema

Embarking on the pioneering journey as the first batch of Bhutanese scholars in Singapore has been a rollercoaster of exhilaration and challenges. My expectations of a thriving, diverse city-state offer a wide range of wisdom, knowledge, and unparalleled opportunities. While Singapore has indeed exceeded my anticipations in numerous ways, adapting to a new culture, navigating social norms, overcoming language barriers, and adjusting to a different lifestyle have presented their fair share of challenges.

Envisioning a vibrant cityscape adorned with skyscrapers and multiculturalism, my arrival in Singapore painted a picture of modernity and efficiency. The city's state-of-the-art facilities and renowned educational institutions validated my aspirations. However, the initial thrill soon gave way to the practicalities of being a student in a foreign land.

One of the first challenges was adapting to Singaporean social norms. Coming from a distinct cultural background, understanding and embracing local customs became crucial. In addition, the lifestyle in Singapore, with its fast-paced nature and emphasis on efficiency, was another aspect that required adjustment. The intense academic workload demanded discipline and time management skills. Balancing academic responsibilities, diverse learning strategies, extracurricular activities, and personal time became a delicate art that I had to master. Over time, I learned to prioritize tasks, delegate responsibilities, and make the most of the available resources to ensure a balanced and fulfilling lifestyle.

Language also posed a significant challenge. While English is widely spoken in Singapore, the local variant, commonly known as Singlish, was initially difficult to comprehend. Singlish incorporates elements of English, Malay, Tamil, and Chinese dialects. However, through constant exposure and practice, I gradually began to understand and even incorporate certain Singlish phrases into my vocabulary. This journey of linguistic adaptation has not only enhanced my communication skills but also allowed me to connect more deeply to the place.

Reflecting on this adaptation, I believe that the key lies in embracing change with an open heart. Every challenge became an opportunity, every cultural difference a chance to broaden my horizons. The belief that everyone can adapt and thrive in a new environment emerged as a guiding principle, inspiring not only my journey but also becoming a source of encouragement for others.

In the end, this place, once a faraway land, has become a second home. The initial challenges have shaped me, strengthened my character, and instilled in me a profound belief in the human capacity to adapt and flourish, no matter how far from home one may find oneself. Therefore, my journey in Singapore as the first batch of Bhutanese scholars has been an incredible adventure, surpassing my expectations in numerous ways. While grappling with the intricacies of a new culture, overcoming language barriers, and adjusting to a different lifestyle, the unwavering support and inclusivity of Singaporean society have been instrumental in my successful transition. Grateful for the opportunities this city-state has provided, I eagerly anticipate continued growth and personal development in this unique and enriching experience.
